Try, I don't know if this will work (it does for Astra mk4) put the key into the ignition and turn untill everything lights up, but don't start the engine, then press lock, unlock and open boot. I know it was commonly used to 're-sync' the astra keys. worth a shot before an expensive trip to fiat

Remote start IS illegal in the UK. It's not a direct rule but a derivation of the one that says you cannot leave a vehicle engine running when the vehicle is unattended.
