The noise inside coming from the engine is a bit higher on lower revs compared to other cars in this class, but when it passes 1700 rpm, it becomes pretty good and sporty. The car is very economical; the fuel consumption in the city is between 7 and 8 liters, and on a highway with 100km/h, it drops to 4.8 to 5 liters.
In a car weighing 1,294kg, it gives a good deal of flexibility, as the VW pulls strongly from the bottom end. My dad has a 1995 Opel Astra wagon and my mum has a 2010 Opel Astra wagon. They are not very special to drive or very fast (72hp and 116hp), but they are good "bread and butter" cars. Very practical, cheap to buy and cheap to maintain. The old one has 270 000 KM on it (about 170k miles) and it only needed very cheap parts over the years.
